FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTION
-
No! The local municipality or school district continues to own the physical space. The municipality retains ownership of the space and is the primary party responsible for maintenance and day-to-day operations. FFK provides funding and project management by working with construction and design companies to plan for select capital projects.
-
Many capital projects are cost-prohibitive for local governments and put added pressure on the taxpayer. Most local taxes and budgets go toward fixed expenses such as salaries, building costs, pensions, and insurance. By accepting donations and partnering with the municipalities, FFK provides a way for community members who want to get directly involved in the quality and quantity of available sports fields in our community. All donations go directly towards improving field space with our volunteer board fundraising and providing technical assistance for capital projects to ensure our community continues to have excellent field space.
-
Working across municipalities and the school district, FFK takes a comprehensive view to advocate for the community's unmet needs for improved field space, better recreational facilities, and new projects. By considering all available field and recreational spaces, FFK can plan different projects to ensure all families can access various recreational spaces.
-

THANK YOU JIM HANLEY!
Fields For Kids (FFK) was launched in October 2006 when a group of more than 200 local parents, led by Jim Hanley, to advocate for better playing fields.
There was a clear and stark contrast between the far superior facilities that Larchmont-Mamaroneck teams traveled to for athletics and what was available locally. Investments by local governments were falling short of the growing demand and usage of available playing space. Residents attended Village,Town and School board meetings to speak about the need for more fields and improvements to meet the growing needs of youth sports.
In January 2007, FFK worked with the Village of Larchmont and the Town of Mamaroneck to file an application to Westchester County's Legacy Grant Program to fund a turf field as well as renovations of Flint and Lorenzen parks. With the help of NY State Assemblyman George Latimer, a Legacy Grant of $2,550,000 was awarded for the project. Alexander Alma Memorial Field at Flint Park officially opened on October 8, 2010.
Following the success of this project, FFK collaborated with the Mamaroneck School district to raise funds to renovate Memorial Field at the high school which opened in March of 2011.
In March of 2014, FFK turned it’s efforts to creating a baseball complex at Lorenzen Park. Work began in the summer of 2016 and was completed in time for the 2017 baseball season.
In fall of 2022, FFK was reenergized with new board members to readdress the same issues that our community faced in 2006. Future planning is underway with all three municipalities and the school district to develop a long-term, sustainable master plan for development and maintenance.
MANY THANKS TO ALL OF THE VOLUNTEERS AND DONORS THAT HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO THE IMPACT OF FFK IN OUR COMMUNITY.
